Yoni Steaming: At Home

Updated: Jun 24

What you will need:

  • Yoni Stool: Choose a comfortable, non-toxic option like this one.

  • Saucepan with lid: Large enough to hold 2 liters of water.

  • Herbs: Select organic herb blends tailored to your cycle and health needs like these or start with water alone.

  • Water Container: A stainless steel or ceramic pot with a capacity of about 2-3 liters, large enough to hold your hot yoni steam, but small enough to fit under your steam stool or comfortably between your knees.

  • Outfit: What you wear (or not) while you steam is entirely up to you.If you enjoy a sauna-like experience, you can wrap yourself in a warm blanket during your steam session. For those experiencing hot flashes or night sweats, steaming naked or using a light, breezy sarong for coverage can be more comfortable.

  • Ambiance: Soft music, candles and incense to create a relaxing atmosphere.

How to Perform the Yoni Steam:

  1. Prepare the Steam: Bring 2 liters of water to a rolling boil in a pan with a lid. Once boiling, add a handful of herbs, cover the pan and turn off the heat. Let the herbs steep for 10 minutes to release their beneficial oils.

  2. Set Up the Steam Area: Pour the contents of the pan into a stainless steel or ceramic bowl. Place the bowl inside your steam stool or in a position where you can comfortably sit or kneel over it.

  3. Get Comfortable: Sit on the stool or kneel over the bowl, placing it slightly behind your knees. Wrap a blanket around your legs and waist to hold in the steam and ensure you are warm and comfortable.

  4. Steam: Relax and steam for about 20-30 minutes. The steam should feel warm, but not uncomfortable. This process is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.

  5. Post-Steam Relaxation: After steaming, wrap yourself warmly and rest for at least half an hour to enhance the healing process.

Additional Tips:

  • Breathing and Awareness: As you steam, breathe deeply into your belly and be mindful of your womb, sensations, and any thoughts or emotions that arise.

  • When to Steam: Steaming is generally practiced in the few days after menstruation. Consult with a practitioner for specific recommendations based on your needs.

Important Considerations:

  • Pregnancy: Do not steam during pregnancy to ensure the cervix stays tightly closed.

  • IUD: Do not steam if you have an IUD.

  • Menstruation: Avoid steaming during menstruation. Consult with a practitioner for guidance on the best times to steam.

  • Genital Piercings: Remove any genital piercings before steaming.

  • After Shaving or Waxing: Wait 48 hours after shaving or waxing before steaming.

By following these guidelines, you can create a soothing and healing yoni steaming practice at home. Enjoy the process, honour your body and embrace the benefits of this ancient ritual.
