Before we get started

here are a few things to keep in mind:

I recommend waiting until your baby is at least 4 weeks old before beginning baby massage. It's also crucial to be aware of any contraindications and cautions - know when it might be best to avoid baby massage.

Initially, massage your baby for 5-15 minutes, gradually increasing the time as both you and your baby become more comfortable with the process.

Use firm strokes, ensuring they’re not too light, as this can tickle and cause discomfort. Above all, pay close attention to your baby’s reactions, relax and savor this special bonding time.

Preparing for Massage

Creating the right environment is key. Ensure the room is warm, both you and your baby are comfortable, and that all necessary items are within reach.

Remove any jewellery from your hands and wrists and make sure your fingernails are trimmed.

It's important to be relaxed before you begin, as babies can sense any tension.

When ready, take a deep breath, roll your shoulders back and shake out your hands.

It might seem a bit unusual, but it’s important to ask your baby for permission before starting the massage. Do this by plscing your hand on their chest, pause, smiling warmly and asking if they would like a massage. If your baby isn’t in the mood, they may fuss or cry. If that happens, try again later.

When both of you are ready, warm some massage oil between your palms to avoid any friction discomfort during the massage.

Remember, as you learn this new skill, your baby is also learning to receive it.

Choose a time when your baby is content - not hungry, tired or just after feeding. A well-timed massage can be a wonderful experience, but when babies are tired or hungry, they’ll prefer sleep or food over a massage!
